John begins with a piercing statement: “If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth.”
That sounds heavy, but think about it this way: have you ever walked into a dark room and stubbed your toe on the furniture? Darkness hides obstacles that hurt us. Light, on the other hand, doesn’t just expose—it protects. John is showing us that fellowship with God isn’t possible when we keep living in shadows.
Darkness isn’t only about big, obvious sins. It can be the little compromises, the quiet bitterness we nurse, or the lies we tell ourselves to avoid uncomfortable truths. Living in darkness feels easier at first—it hides things. But sooner or later, it costs us our peace.
Walking with God requires stepping into light, even if the light feels uncomfortable. Why? Because the light doesn’t just reveal. It heals.
Reflection: What hidden corners of your life might God be inviting into His light today?
